This project deals with the rehabilitation of a house on the slopes of Montgó, reinterpreting the vernacular Mediterranean language from a contemporary and respectful point of view. Based on a building from the 1970s, the proposal recovers its essence to dialogue with the landscape, matter and memory.
A house that is not invented, but remembered. That rises from the earth with the memory of what has already been, and with the will to remain.
01_Landscape
The Montgó is not just a backdrop; it is a constant presence that defines the character of the place. In this house, the landscape is not contemplated from a distance, but is inhabited from proximity and rootedness. The house is situated on a hillside that slopes gently down to the sea, which allows the main rooms to be open to the horizon and maintain a direct relationship with the topography. The design of the garden, with native species and gentle paths, underlines this connection, acting as a natural transition between the mountain and the architecture.
02_Object
Rather than designing a new house, the project proposes a respectful reconstruction of the existing. We start from the original volumes, characteristic of the residential architecture of the 70’s in Denia – curved walls, sloping roofs and introverted distributions – to reinterpret them from a current logic. The new architectural object does not impose a different form, but rather consolidates what was already there, providing spatial clarity, energy efficiency and honest materiality. The result is a sober, timeless volume that unfolds in the field with equal parts humility and rotundity.
03_Skin
The envelope recovers the material identity of the area: textured local stone walls are combined with terracotta enclosures and natural wood carpentry, creating a balance between craftsmanship and functionality. A light pergola, with a rusted metal structure and covered with wooden slats, casts shade over the outdoor living areas, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The skin of the house breathes tradition and belonging: thermally efficient materials, passive solar protection solutions and a color palette that emanates from the land itself. Each element contributes to camouflage the house, anchor it and integrate it into its environment.
